Neither is particularly helpful.

The truth is more nuanced—and, fortunately, much simpler.

Both are diamonds. Both can be beautiful. Both can be worn and enjoyed for generations. The difference lies primarily in how they were formed, their rarity, and the way they are priced and valued in the marketplace.

Choosing between them is less about determining which one is objectively better and more about deciding which qualities matter most to you.

The Short Answer: Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes.

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond with the same essential chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural diamond.

Both are made primarily of carbon arranged in a crystalline structure. Both have the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. Both exhibit the same fundamental optical and physical properties that make a diamond a diamond.

They are not cubic zirconia. They are not moissanite. They are not imitation diamonds.

The primary difference is their origin.

A natural diamond formed within the earth over an extraordinary period of time. A lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment using technology that replicates the conditions under which diamonds form naturally.

Once they exist, however, both are diamonds.

How Natural Diamonds Are Formed

Natural diamonds began forming deep beneath the earth's surface, where extreme heat and pressure transformed carbon into crystalline diamond.

Many of the diamonds used in jewelry today formed billions of years ago before eventually making their way closer to the earth's surface through volcanic activity.

Their journey is part of their appeal.

No one decided how quickly they would form or what their final characteristics should be. Their size, inclusions, color, and growth patterns developed naturally over immense periods of time.

For some people, that history matters.

A natural diamond represents something genuinely rare: a stone formed by geological processes that cannot be reproduced in exactly the same way or on the same timescale.

That sense of rarity and origin is often the reason someone chooses a natural diamond, even when a lab-grown diamond could offer more size for the same budget.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Created

Lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology that reproduces the conditions necessary for diamond growth.

There are two primary methods used to grow diamonds: High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Both methods begin with a small piece of diamond material, often referred to as a seed.

With HPHT, the seed is exposed to intense pressure and heat that encourage carbon to crystallize around it.

With CVD, the seed is placed inside a chamber containing carbon-rich gases. Under controlled conditions, carbon atoms gradually build upon the diamond seed, layer by layer.

The result is diamond crystal.

A lab-grown diamond does not emerge from the earth, but it is not an imitation of one, either. It is simply a diamond with a different origin.

Can You Tell the Difference Between a Lab-Grown and Natural Diamond?

Not by simply looking at them.

A natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond of comparable quality can appear identical to the naked eye. In many cases, distinguishing between them requires specialized equipment capable of detecting differences in growth patterns and other characteristics.

This is why reputable diamonds are properly identified and why grading reports distinguish between laboratory-grown and natural origin.

If someone tells you that you can always tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one just by looking at it, that is not a reliable standard to shop by.

Why Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Less Expensive?

The most significant difference most buyers notice is price.

Lab-grown diamonds are generally less expensive than comparable natural diamonds because they can be produced in a controlled environment and their supply is not limited by geological rarity.

This can allow buyers to choose a larger diamond or higher color and clarity specifications without increasing their overall budget to the same degree.

That does not mean a lab-grown diamond is “cheap.” A beautifully cut, high-quality diamond is still a valuable piece of material and requires technology, expertise, cutting, grading, and craftsmanship.

It simply exists within a very different market.

Natural diamonds, on the other hand, derive part of their value from rarity and the limited nature of their supply. A particular combination of size, color, clarity, and cut may be significantly more difficult to find in nature than it is to produce in a laboratory.

If maximizing size and specifications within a particular budget is your priority, lab-grown may make more sense. If natural rarity and geological origin are important to you, a natural diamond may be worth the additional investment.

Does One Sparkle More Than the Other?

No—not simply because one is lab-grown and the other is natural.

Sparkle is primarily influenced by the way a diamond is cut and how effectively it handles light.

A beautifully cut lab-grown diamond can be extraordinarily brilliant. A poorly cut natural diamond can appear comparatively dull. Origin alone does not determine how much a diamond sparkles.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds More Ethical?

A diamond's origin alone does not provide a complete picture of its impact.

Natural diamonds can be sourced through established supply chains with traceability and responsible sourcing standards, while lab-grown diamonds require significant energy and industrial resources to produce. The environmental impact of a lab-grown diamond can also vary depending on how and where it was grown and the energy sources used in that process.

If ethical sourcing or environmental impact is an important part of your decision, it is worth looking beyond broad marketing claims and asking specific questions about the origin and sourcing of the diamond you are considering.

Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Hold Their Value?

This is one of the most important questions to understand before making a purchase.

Generally speaking, neither natural nor lab-grown diamonds should be purchased primarily as a financial investment. The price paid at retail is not necessarily the amount you could expect to receive if you later sold the diamond.

That said, natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds behave differently in the resale market.

Lab-grown diamond prices have declined significantly as technology and production capacity have increased, and comparable diamonds may continue to become less expensive as supply grows. As a result, a lab-grown diamond should generally be purchased because you love it and appreciate the value it offers—not because you expect it to retain a particular percentage of its purchase price.

Natural diamonds have historically held a stronger position in the resale market because their supply is inherently limited, particularly for certain sizes and qualities. However, resale value can still vary dramatically depending on the individual diamond, market conditions, quality, and where and how it is sold.

The most practical approach is to purchase the diamond you want to wear, not the diamond you expect to sell later.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Less Durable?

No.

Because lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same fundamental physical properties, both are exceptionally durable.

A diamond—whether lab-grown or natural—is rated 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Both are highly resistant to scratching and well suited for everyday jewelry.

That does not mean either is indestructible. Diamonds can still chip or fracture when subjected to sufficient force, particularly around vulnerable points and edges.

The durability of your finished ring also depends heavily on the setting, the design, and how the jewelry is worn.

Why Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond may be an excellent choice if you:

  • Want the largest possible diamond within your budget

  • Want to prioritize higher color or clarity specifications

A budget that might accommodate a smaller natural diamond could allow for a larger center stone, a three-stone design, or additional investment in the setting when choosing lab-grown instead.

Why Choose a Natural Diamond?

A natural diamond may be the right choice if you:

  • Value geological rarity and natural origin

  • Feel connected to the history and age of the stone

  • Prefer the limited nature of naturally occurring diamonds

  • Place importance on the traditional diamond market

  • Are comfortable allocating a larger portion of your budget to the center stone

For some people, the appeal of a natural diamond is difficult to quantify on a specification sheet.

It is not necessarily about having a larger stone or a higher clarity grade. It is about knowing that the diamond formed naturally within the earth and carries a history that began long before it became part of a piece of jewelry.

That can be meaningful—and it is a perfectly valid reason to choose one.

The better question is not “Which diamond is better?”

It is:

What matters most to you?
