Carat weight is often the first thing people ask about when shopping for a diamond.
How many carats is it?
The question makes sense. Carat weight has become almost synonymous with diamond size, and a two-carat diamond certainly sounds larger than a one-carat diamond.
But carat weight does not actually measure size.
It measures weight.
That distinction is more important than it may seem, because two diamonds with the same carat weight can look noticeably different once they are placed side by side—and even more different once they are set into a ring.
Shape, proportions, measurements, setting style, and even the width of the band can all influence how large a diamond appears on the hand. And when you begin comparing diamonds with moissanite or other diamond alternatives, the material itself becomes another important part of the equation.
Understanding carat weight is not about learning how to choose the biggest diamond possible. It is about understanding what you are actually getting for your money—and choosing the combination of size, shape, proportion, and material that creates the look you want.
What Is a Carat?
A carat is a unit of weight used for gemstones.
One carat equals 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams.
That means a 2-carat diamond weighs twice as much as a 1-carat diamond. It does not necessarily mean that it will look twice as large.

Moissanite and simulated diamonds, however, are different materials. That means two stones with the exact same physical measurements may have different actual weights depending on what they are made from.
This is particularly important when comparing stones that are marketed using phrases like diamond equivalent, carat equivalent, or simply a carat number without explaining whether that number refers to actual weight or visual size.
Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds
When comparing a natural diamond to a lab-grown diamond, carat weight means the same thing.
A one-carat natural diamond and a one-carat lab-grown diamond both weigh 0.2 grams because both are diamond. If they are cut to similar proportions, they will also have similar physical dimensions.
This means a 2-carat lab-grown diamond can be compared directly with a 2-carat natural diamond when considering size.
The difference between them is their origin, not the way carat weight translates to physical size.
Of course, two 2-carat diamonds can still look different if they are cut to different proportions. One may have a broader spread across the top, while another carries more of its weight beneath the surface. But that difference comes from the way the diamonds are cut—not whether one was grown in a laboratory or formed naturally.
Moissanite
Moissanite has a different density than diamond.
Because of this, a moissanite stone that is physically the same size as a diamond will not necessarily have the same literal carat weight.
For that reason, moissanite is often sold according to its millimeter measurements or described using a diamond-equivalent weight.
For example, a moissanite described as the equivalent of a 2-carat diamond is generally referring to its visual size, not necessarily its actual weight.
This distinction matters.
A moissanite that measures approximately the same length and width as a 2-carat diamond may look similar in size on the hand, even though the two stones are different materials and do not weigh the same amount.
When comparing moissanite to diamond, millimeter measurements will usually give you a much clearer picture of how the stones will compare visually.
Simulated Diamonds
The same principle applies to simulated diamonds.
A simulated diamond may be made from a variety of materials, each with its own density and physical properties. Cubic zirconia, for example, is denser than diamond, meaning that two stones with the same dimensions will not have the same actual weight.
As a result, comparing a simulated diamond directly to a natural or lab-grown diamond by carat weight alone can be misleading.
Simulated diamonds are often better compared according to their millimeter dimensions or their stated diamond-equivalent size.
An 8 × 6 mm oval simulated diamond and an 8 × 6 mm oval natural diamond will have a similar physical footprint on the finger, even though their actual weights may differ.
When Comparing Different Stone Types, Compare Millimeters First

Look at:
How many millimeters is it?
For example, an oval stone measuring approximately 10 × 8 mm will have a similar physical footprint regardless of whether it is a natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, moissanite, or another diamond simulant.
Its weight, sparkle, durability, and other properties may be entirely different—but the dimensions tell you how much space it will occupy on the finger.
This becomes especially useful when shopping across different stone types. A “2-carat equivalent” moissanite, a 2-carat lab-grown diamond, and a simulated diamond described as equivalent to 2 carats may all be intended to approximate a similar visual size, even though their literal weights are not necessarily the same.
When comparing different materials, carat tells you about weight. Millimeters tell you about size.
Carat Weight vs. Millimeter Size
Even when comparing diamonds to other diamonds, measurements can be just as important as carat weight.
A diamond's dimensions are usually expressed in millimeters.
For an oval, you might see something like:

For a round:
6.5 × 6.5 mm
The first measurement generally represents length, while the second represents width.
These numbers give you a much better idea of the diamond's physical footprint than carat weight alone.

A deeper diamond is not automatically poorly cut, and a broader diamond is not automatically better. Extreme proportions in either direction can affect beauty and light performance.
The goal is balance.
You want a diamond that has attractive proportions for its shape while still giving you the visual presence you want.

For elongated diamonds, the relationship between length and width can significantly change the way a stone appears.
